This weekend workshop covers all of the basics of becoming a parenting coach and/or expanding one’s skills and strengths as a parenting coach with an existing practice. It is designed to develop foundational coaching skills using the Kellogg Method, assess your strengths and areas for growth, and, for aspiring coaches, provide enough information about becoming a parenting coach to be able to decide if this is a professional path you wish to follow.

Our unique Parenting Coaching Workshop is:

1. Personal, designed to provide individual learning experiences which include one on one sessions with Lorna Kellogg

2. Designed to be a graduate level, rigorous educational program for professionals who want to develop or expand their parenting coaching skills

3. Small, we keep our workshops intentionally small and have limited enrollment. This way we are able to design each weekend workshop to specifically meet the needs of the individual participants based on their previous experience and education.

The workshop includes:

1. Understanding basic parenting coaching principals:

a. What is coaching? (Coaching is not therapy, teaching or telling clients what to do)

b. How to develop trusting relationships with your clients (parents are a special type of client)

c. How to elicit your client’s inherent wisdom and instincts (coaching is not advising and is not about the coach)

d. Supporting parents in realizing their strengths and developing new skills

e. Helping parents become self-correcting and self-generating in their future parenting habits after their coaching sessions are over

a. Self evaluation and professional feedback on existing strengths and areas for growth

b. The five essential coaching qualities (going deep), deep inquiry, deep presence, deep listening, deep summoning and deep responding

c. Learning Skillful Means practice, how to draw simply and skillfully from your own wisdom and body of knowledge

d. Learning to ask the right questions and make meaningful inquiries

e. Intuition, honing your coach’s intuition and ability to respond skillfully to your gut instincts as a coach

The Kellogg Parenting Coaching Institute trainings were developed and designed by Lorna Kellogg over the course of her twenty plus years of experience in parenting coaching. She has coached educators and legislators on issues related to early childhood education and child development and worked with thousands of parents. Between 1994 and 2001 over 300 teachers and early childhood educators went through her teacher training and/or intern program at the Kellogg Child Development Center which was used as the case study for high quality early care and education in the United Sates by the American Academy of Political and Social Science (this project ended in 2001). The Kellogg Teacher Training Method emerged from this era of coaching teachers and parents. The Kellogg Method is (academic) research based with a strong emphasis on utilizing one's intuition in a logical, skillful way.  Woven into the trainings are Lorna's expertise, practical experience, deep knowledge and education from some of the top coaching institutes in the country.

Workshop Information:

Each weekend workshop classes are held Saturday 9am-5pm & Sunday 9am-4pm

(Includes an introductory dinner Friday night for participants who arrival early enough to join us!)

Coaching Practice Supervision: for coaches wanting to have personal oversight of their parenting coaching practice. Most, if not all, notable coaching institutes recommend between 1-5 years of supervision during the development and growth of one’s practice. Professional Coaching Internships

This professional internship program is designed for people who are interested in becoming a parenting coach but don't have all the professional, educational or life experience required. Internships are custom designed for each intern based on his or her interests, area of expertise, and level of coaching or counseling experience. Internships last between 6-12 months depending on each individual intern's needs.

Taking the Introduction to Parenting Coaching weekend workshop is advised prior to beginning an internship program.

Some of the basic inclusions in our Parenting coaching internships:

3. Observation and overseeing of your initial coaching sessions

4. Support in developing your individual parenting coaching practice

Kellogg Coaching Institute Certification Process for Coach Candidates

Becoming certified with the Kellogg Parenting Coaching Institute is an option after taking our Introduction to Parenting Coaching weekend workshop (if you are already a parenting professional), completing a professional parenting coaching internship with Lorna Kellogg or another Kellogg Institute staff member or completing our year long Parenting Coaching Training. Anyone who has taken one of our trainings or completed a professional internship may go through the certification process. The process is rigorous, our standards are extremely high and the requirements are as follows:

Certification requirements include:

  1. 25% Completing all homework assignments given during your training
  2. 25% Completing the training or internship class hours
  3. 25% Completing 8 case studies
  4. 25% Certification Board/Certification Day

You must receive at least a 75% grade to become certified

Homework will include among other things:

  1. Reading and writing reports on a minimum of ten coaching and parenting professional books chosen by yourself and the Kellogg Institute
  2. Written assignments
  3. Self Observation Practices
  4. Writing a final essay on your training and work as a coach

Case Study work includes:

  1. Working pro bono (in exchange for their feedback) with 8 different parents/families for at least 12 weeks/sessions
  2. Completing a self evaluation form after each coaching session
  3. A Kellogg staff member will sit in on at least 8 of those sessions and provide feedback from those individual sessions
  4. At the end of each coaching program a written report is due on the coaching goals and outcomes and your assessment of what went well and why and what could have gone better and why
  5. Each parent or family will provide feedback to the Kellogg Institute on their experience of working with you and what was more or less helpful and whether the stated goals and outcomes were achieved

Certification Day

You present your work to a certification board of 3-4 parenting professionals and coaches who will review your case studies, home work, class work, final essay, professor’s review of your work and determine your certification status. This is worth 25% of your certification grade. You will receive your official certificate at the end of certification day.

It typically takes a coaching institute about five years to become certified through the International Coaching Federation. The Kellogg Coaching Institute will begin this process in 2012. Students of the Kellogg Institute can choose to be certified through the IFC in lieu of the Kellogg Institute if they prefer.
